Kudos to Bass Pro Shop – They won’t build Green Bay store in wetland

Despite the bulldozing efforts by Gov. Walker and the Legislature, to destroy a wetland in Green Bay, on behalf of the Packers and Bass Pro Shops, the outdoor retailer has walked away from the deal, saying they would not build in a wetland.

The Legislature passed a special bill to bypass wetland regulations and process. But Bass Pro Shop said forget it.

Here is a piece from AP

And some reaction.

Wild Warner applauds Bass Pro Shops. It would have been the height of hypocrisy for a fishing and wildlife shop to build a store in a wetland. In an exchange with the company’s customer service department, Bass Pro issued this statement:

Bass Pro Shops has a long and proud tradition of our conservation efforts and is a very conservation minded company. We have been recognized many times by conservation organizations across America for those conservation efforts.
Again, we are a very conservation minded company, we want to to educate, inform, and entertain visitors to our stores concerning the value of fish and wildlife, to help them appreciate our heritage of hunting and fishing, and to motivate their personal  involvement in the conservation of our outdoor resources. Building on the wetlands would not promote this intent. We are proud of our retail stores and we believe that they offer a unique way to experience the outdoors while getting the best value in premium outdoor gear. We will not tarnish that pride by building a retail store on wetlands.
