UW Madison’s new class, “Last Child in the Park,” kicked off in Warner Park on Sept. 21, 2011 with a walk around the park’s entire wild side. It was not hard to miss.
Thirty four students from Sherman Middle School, mentored by 17 UW undergraduates, were introduced to the park by Professor Jack Kloppenburg, and PhD student Trish O’Kane.
This is the second year for the unique program, which introduces students to the natural wonders of Madison’s largest urban park.
Every Wednesday, the students meet at Sherman and walk into Warner to identify birds, trees, plants, and, often, just to enjoy the fresh air and freedom from a classroom.
Sherman Middle School Social Worker Julie Wilkie helps chaperone the children.
