Wild Warner meeting minutes
August 24, 2010
Fourteen people were in attendance at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Among them were several new faces. By way of introduction we talked about the history of the park, the loss of cattails, woods, marshland, and declining quality of water.
Four motions were passed during the meeting. These will be presented as requests to the Parks Department and/or the Board of Parks Commissioners.
The width of the paths in the upper prairie have more than doubled to nearly 20 feet since the original mow in spring. We will ask the Parks Department to leave the path on the hill to a 4-foot width path. We will also ask Parks to let the meadow at the base of the dog path be left un-mowed with only two 4-foot paths for walking.
(Note: In a phone call, East Parks Chief Craig Klinke agreed to narrow the mowed path in the meadow.)
With the loss of 14 trees along Sherwood Avenue, due to bike path construction, we recommend that the Parks Commission commit to planting 5 trees for every tree cut down due to the construction. Planting would be in another part of Warner.
We adopted Trish O’Kane’s geese management proposal, with two amendments. The proposal primarily recommends that Madison invite Geesepeace to Madison to create a long-term management program for Warner‘s geese population. The city would have to request them to come. We would like the city to extend the invitation. We will ask for assistance and support from the Parks Commission, and Alder Satya Rhodes-Conway.
Dolores suggested that additional Wisconsin examples be added. All agreed.
Erin suggested that Warner become a pilot project for geese management. Agreed.
4) We also voted to recommend that the Oct. 31 bicycle race course be moved farther away from oak trees. Tim will work on gathering scientific support and contacting race organizers.
Conversations during the meeting included:
a) Ideas for getting Wild Warner more exposure. Suggestion was made to talk to the new Parks commissioner Ms. Leopold, and invite her to take a tour through the park.
b) Putting an article in Northside News about memories of the park.
c) Putting a history page on the website.
d) Wanting to get Warner designated as a conservancy.
e) Minutes of July 27 were amended to specify a desire for a land bridge over Hwy 113 that would link Lakeview Hill County Park with Warner City Park.
f) Doing a press release with Trish’s proposal paper to the Northside News.
e) Send the geese proposal to the Parks Department and Parks Commission
Jim has done the paper work and Wild Warner Inc. is officially a Wisconsin nonprofit corporation. No. W056794 Dolores and Jim are the incorporators. Jim also reported he has added “wildwarner.org” as a Web address. It points to “wildwarnerpark.org”
We talked about membership and the status that it brings, possible dues to pay for brochures, and looking at 501c3 status, possibly finding a fiscal sponsor.
